Tavares was selected by the New York Islanders in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft with the 1st overall pick that year. John began his junior career with th Oshawa Generals of the Ontario Hockey League, but was involved in a blockbuster trade between Oshawa and the London Knights. He would finish his junior career with the Knights.
