Varone began his Ontario Hockey League career with the Kitchener Rangers but was dealt to the London Knights in a blockbuster trade that sent Columbus Blue Jackets goaltender, Steve Mason, to Kitchener in exchange for Varone and others. Phil was drafted by the San Jose Sharks in the 2009 NHL Entry Draft in the fifth round, one hundred fourty seventh overall.
