The son of former NHLer Steve Smith, Barron was drafted by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 7th round, 188th overall in the 2009 National Hockey League Entry Draft. He began his junior career with the London Knights but was traded to the Peterborough Petes early in his OHL career.
